SUMMARY:[:IW]המבדיל בבית הנסן[:en]Hamavdil at the Hansen House[:]
DESCRIPTION:“Hamavdil” is a sound intervention in the West Jerusalem soundscape from a temporary tower built at the  Hansen House by the Czech architecht Martin Rainisj.\n“Havdala” [Differenciation] is a ritual prayer and ceremony that marks the end of the Jewish Sabbath and the beginning of the week.\nAmir Bolzman and the Sala-manca group blurred the soundscape of the neighborhoods of Talbyeh\, Katamon\, and the German Colony\, playing a Jewish Havdalah prayer in the Arab-Jewish style. At first instance\, this traditional Makam music coming from a tower using this particular type of speaker\, appears to be a Muezzin. The Muslim call to prayer and the voice of the Muezzin\, played with similar technology from mosques\, has been the focus of a “sound conflict” in Israel and Jerusalem\, with Jewish citizens complaining of the “contamination” of the soundscape and leading to the advancement of the “Muezzin Law” in the Israeli Knesset\, a law that aims at restricting the scope of those prayers.\nFrom another direction\, the Arab-Jewish sound was suppressed from the Israel soundscape for ideological reason for many years.\nThe work challenges notions of identity and orientation regarding the local soundscape\, and propose us to imagine another possible present or future.\nThe sound is based on Moshe Habusha’s Havdala Makam Rast from youtube.\nTechnical support Yoav Fisch

SUMMARY:[:IW]הדיבוק 1937--2017[:en]The Dybbuk 1937-2017[:]
DESCRIPTION:At the Israel Festival\, Jerusalem Theater\nDER DYBBUK (1937-2017)\n50 minutes | Film and Live Performance \n\n\nDirected by Michael Waszynski (Poland\, 1937) with a new edition by Adi Kaplan\, Shachar Carmel & Sala-manca (2017) \nLive dubbing  by Lea Mauas and Diego Rotman (Sala-manca group)\, Live Follies by Adi Kaplan\, Shachar Carmel and Ayu Rotman Mauas & Live Music by The Jerusalem Street Orchestra\, conducted by Ido Shpitalnik \n״The dead were returned to life\, and a culture long vanished\, wiped out by the Holocaust\, was resurrected on the screen” (Ira Konigsberg) \nA new\, re-edited version of the Yiddish film will be screened with live music and dubbing performance in the courtyard of the former Jerusalem Leprosarium (Hansen House)\, a venue no less gothic than the film’s aesthetics. \nThe new\, film-performance version is based on the film directed by Michael Waszynsky (1937)\, based upon S. Ansky’s play Der Dybbuk. Ansky wrote the play after completing the ethnographic expedition he organized between 1912-1914. The play (and film) tells the story of the ill-fated love between Hanan and Lea\, the possession of Lea’s body by Hanan’s soul\, the exorcism ceremony\, and death as resolution – a re-encounter of the lovers in the next world. \nAdi Kaplan\, Shahar Carmel\, and Sala-manca not only re-edited the film\, they also replaced the original music composed by Henekh Kohn and the cantorial songs performed by Gershon Sirotta\, with a new score. Performed live by the Jerusalem Street Orchestra\, conducted by Ido Shpitalnik\, the score is an adapted version of the Vltva (The Moldau)\, the second symphonic poem of Má vlast (My Homeland)\, by Czech composer Bedřich Smetana.  The use of Smetana’s Moldau as a clear reference to Israel’s national anthem – resonating it\, but different – creates a liminal sonic soundscape incapable of defining an accurate sense of place or ideology. \n  \nLea Mauas and Diego Rotman of the Sala-manca group are professional and real life partners\, possessing the voices of the “dead but eternal” characters\, originally performed by another real-life couple\, Lili Liliana (Leah) and Leon Liebgold (Hannan) \nIn the spirit of The Dybbuk\, the artists visit the archive instead of the cemetery\, and invite the dead to dance with the living once again. \nWith the support of  Ostrovsky Family Fund\,  Artis Grant Program\, Polish Institute – Tel Aviv\, P.A.T. (Performance Art and Technology)\, Hazira\, Jerusalem Municipality\, The National Authority for Yiddish Culture\, Bet Shalom Aleichem.

DESCRIPTION:Israel / France 2016\, 85 min\, Hebrew\, Arabic and Tigrinya\, English & Hebrew subtitles \nAvi Mograbi and Chen Alon meet African asylum-seekers in a detention facility in the middle of the Negev desert\, where they are confined by the state of Israel. Together\, they question the status of the refugees in Israel using theatrical techniques. What leads men and women to leave everything behind and go towards the unknown? Why does Israel\, founded by refugees\, refuse to take into consideration the situation of the exiled\, thrown onto the roads by war\, genocide and persecution? Can the Israelis working with the asylum seekers put themselves in the refugees’ shoes?

SUMMARY:[:IW] פתיחה ופרפורמנס | אנא התנהגו בטבעיות[:en]Please Behave Naturally | Adi Kaplan and Shachar Carmel Opening and Performance [:]
DESCRIPTION:Mamuta at Hansen House presents: \nPlease Behave Naturally \nAn exhibition by Adi Kaplan and Shahar Carmel \nCuration and intervention: Sala-Manca Group \nPerformance: fragments from “The Pianist”\, electro-acoustic performance by Shira Legman in collaboration with Adi Kaplan and Shachar Carmel | Performers: Hagai Freshtman (drums)\, Shira Legman (Cello)\, Adi Kaplan and Shachar Carmel (Foleys) | Paintings: Adi and Shachar | Music and Soundtrack designs: Shira Legman | Video adaptation: Shachar Davis | Sound Design: Giory Polity \n55 pastel-oil paintings on canvases of different sizes make up the three series that comprise this exhibition\, each documenting the goings-on in a different Tel Aviv public space. Carmel and Kaplan’s paintings are based on their own texts\, each line of text inspiring one of the paintings. The series\, painted over the course of the past three years\, were printed in the book “Please Behave Naturally\,” published in 2016 by LevAfor Publishing. Upon the book’s printing and publication\, the paintings in it were rendered a byproduct of the book’s production. \nThus in a certain sense the exhibition is the catalog\, elucidating the series of paintings that appear in the book. The exhibition and the book create paths that are reflected in one another\, using the same images to tell similar but different stories. The book and the exhibition are not illustrations of one another\, but parallel entities with similar faces. The installation in the gallery is a product of the re-editing of Kaplan and Carmel’s three stories within a single story\, told through the intervention of the Sala-Manca group. \nKaplan and Carmel have been working together for more than two decades. They create together\, complement one another\, erase\, add\, and complete one another. Their choice of oil-pastel is an aesthetic as much as a conceptual choice: the colors are never resolved\, always open for erasure or for the ongoing act of painting. \n  \n=========== \nWe met Kaplan and Carmel\, who work on the seamline between politics and art\, during a guerilla action that they initiated in 2004\, with the installation of the exhibition “Russian compounds” in Jerusalem’s Russian Compound (together with Yoram Blumenkrantz). The exhibition was presented as a response to the curators of the Artfocus 4 bienalle\, after those agreed to sign the participating artists on a secret contract with the ministry of defense\, which manages the site in which the biennale took place – a British mandatory prison that is located also in the Russian Compound. Shahar and Kaplan presented a series of paintings based on photographs of B’tselem. This was the beginning of an acquaintance that led to many collaborations\, most of which took place in the framework of the “Heara” contemporary art interventions. The last – the collaborative work “The Dybbuk 1937-2017” was presented in the framework of the Jerusalem International Film Festival. \nIn the last one the two artists\, in cooperation with the musician Shira Legman and the animation artist Shahar Davis\, created the show “The pianist\,” which combines live and recorded music\, soundscape from the places described in the paintings\, narration\, and animated projections of the paintings. The show will go up in Hansen House in the opening of the exhibition. \n  \nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/874567549372983/?active_tab=about

SUMMARY:[:IW] הדיבוק (1937–2017) סרט\, תזמורת ומיצג בהופעה חיה[:en]Der Dybbuk 1937-2017 | Film\, Live Orchestra and Live Performance[:]
DESCRIPTION:Der Dybbuk 1937-2017 | Film\, Live Orcehstra and Live Performance by Sala-manca group\, The Jerusalem Street Orchestra\, conducted by Ido Shpitalnik\, Adi Kaplan and Shachar Carmel | Yiddish (with English and Hebrew subtitles)\nA new edition of Michael Waszynski’s Film (Poland) with by Adi Kaplan\, Shachar Carmel & Sala-manca \n״The dead were returned to life\, and a culture long vanished wiped out by the Holocaust\, was resurrected on the screen” (Ira Konigsberg) \nA new\, re-edited version of the Yiddish film will be screened with live music and dubbing performance in the courtyard of the former Jerusalem Leprosarium (Hansen House)\, a venue no less gothic than the film’s aesthetics. \nLea Mauas and Diego Rotman of the Sala-manca group are professional and real life partners\, possessing the voices of the “dead but eternal” characters\, originally performed by another real-life couple\, Lili Liliana (Leah) and Leon Liebgold (Hannan) \nIn the spirit of The Dybbuk\, the artists visit the archive instead of the cemetery\, and invite the dead to dance with the living once again. \nWith the support of The National Authority for Yiddish Culture\, Ostrovsky Family Fund\, Hansen House\, Jerusalem Municipality\, Bet Shalom Aleichem\, and the Polish Institute.

SUMMARY:[:IW]סמינר האש\, הקלטות מהספריות הכחולה והשחורה\, ברנדון לבל[:en]The Fire Seminar (recordings from the black and blue library)\, Brandon LaBelle[:]
DESCRIPTION:The Fire Seminar (recordings from the black and blue library) \nBrandon LaBelle \nStaged as a collective listening session\, The Fire Seminar takes place in the back garden of the Hansen House and is centered on the building of a fire. Utilizing a modified oil drum along with prepared and found materials\, the Seminar is a performative situation aimed at reflecting upon states of dispossession and creative survival. \nShaping The Fire Seminar will be a collection of audio recordings and documents culled from the Black and Blue Library and amplified through a sound system. From Blind Willie McTell and Ella Fitzgerald to Memphis Slim and Louis Armstrong\, the project of the Blues can be heard as an audible catalogue of the beaten\, the forlorn\, the libidinal and the resilient\, forming a rich and complex narrative of lyrical redemption and celebration. As Fred Moten suggests\, the black poetic tradition is one of deep resourcefulness and creative improvisation\, which mobilizes the logic of loss toward new states of self-possession and collective determination. By punctuating the night with a blaze of fire\, The Seminar draws out the Blues as a particular audibility\, one flushed with traditions of oral culture\, musical soul and sonic intensity\, and that may compel a passionate listening. \nDeveloped in collaboration with the artistic research project Synsmaskin\, Bergen Academy: http://synsmaskinen.net \n– \nBrandon LaBelle is an artist\, writer and theorist working with sound culture\, voice\, and questions of agency. He develops and presents artistic projects and performances within a range of international contexts\, often working collaboratively and in public. Recent works include “The Ungovernable”\, Documenta listening space\, Athens (2017)\, “Oficina de Autonomia”\, Ybakatu\, Curitiba (2017)\, “The Hobo Subject”\, Gallery Forum\, Zagreb (2016)\, and “The Living School”\, South London Gallery (2016). SUMMARY:אקסודוס: סקייפ-פרפורמנס מאת לי לוריאן\, בכורה של עבודה בתהליך נצחיExodus: A Skype-performance by Li Lorian
DESCRIPTION:Exodus is a project that takes the form of a lecture-performance\, using Skype and split audiences\, researching questions of mobility\, migration\, outsiderness\, homeland and statelessness. \nEncompassing several journeys of migrants and refugees\, the work reflects upon the position of being away from one’s homeland and mother-tongue. It also examines the historical and political connections between different mobility statuses – from Jewish refugees fleeing Europe during World War II\, to the 1948 Palestinian exodus and Nakba\, to Syrian-born Palestinians making attempts to find shelter in Europe today – being second-time refugees\, through the artist’s point of view as a Jewish-Israeli based in Jerusalem\, temporary located in Germany. \nIn a world of migration\, new questions of national and ethnic identity arise\, while global colonialist and imperialist forces have made people foreigners in their homeland. I am interested in both the subjective emotional aspect of being a stranger and the effect of it on one’s political position. \nIf I forget thee\, O Jerusalem/ Let my right hand forget her cunning/ Let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth/ If I remember thee not/ If I set not Jerusalem above my chiefest joy//\nPsalms \nWithin the form of a lecture-performance\, I weave different references from the Jewish tradition and place it in a new context. Performed in English\, Hebrew\, Arabic and German\, the “Babylonian tower” indicates my experience in different social and cultural environments. Using Skype and split audiences – one live and the other abroad (watching the piece live through a screen on-line)\, I wish to research the long distance relations between the two audiences and examine what is “out of sight\, out of mind” both in format and in content. \nPerformance of work in progress: 27.9.16\n8pm | Akademie Schloss Solitude\, Stuttgart // 9pm | Mamuta Art Center\, Jerusalem

SUMMARY:פתיחת התערוכה של קרן שביט ועדי אומרי ומופע של ווינטר פאמיליKeren Shavit and Adi Omry Opening Exhibition+ Winter Familiy Live Performance
DESCRIPTION:In her recent video and photography pieces (2013 – 2016)\, Keren Shavit refers to different genres\, finding inspiration in experimental film\, documentary film\, home videos and even reality TV shows\, despite the aesthetic and narrative gap between Shavit’s work and the TV genre. Shavit places herself at the center of the arena\, exposing the viewer to the sensitive relations between the artist and the film’s subjects. \nShavit defines her own unique approach to beauty\, continuing the development of her aesthetics\, a process that she started in her first work: a different model for family life\, different rules of behavior\, attraction to what is considered unusual and different. Shavit’s corpus of work stands out in the Israel art world. Her voice\, like the voices of the subjects of her films\, is surprising\, intriguing\, shocking\, enjoyable\, and calls for a more complex life\, where the dark can be a positive norm. \nKeren Shavit is a mixed media artist and curator\, living and working in Brooklyn\, New York\, and a graduate of Bezalel Academy of Art and Design\, Jerusalem. The main areas of focus in her work are experimental narratives and the re-rendering of reality and memory. \nOpening live show: Winter Family \nWinter Family is an Israeli-French experimental music duo consisting of Ruth Rosenthal and Xavier Klaine\, who have been working together since 2004. Their albums were released under the Sub Rosa\, Alt-Vinyl and Ici d’ailleurs labels to great acclaim. The duo has performed at venues\, churches\, galleries and theaters around the world\, including the Louvre\, the Art Basel fair\, the Dormition Abbey in Jerusalem and more.

SUMMARY:סיור בפרדייזParadise Tour
DESCRIPTION:In the year 2018\, the utopia that Boris Schatz wrote about in his novella “The Rebuilt Jerusalem: A Daydream” (1923)\, is supposed to be fulfilled. A Utopian Jerusalem in which paradise exists; harmonious coexistence with nature and with the Arab residents of the city\, and building of the Third Temple\, which will serve as a museum\, with the consent of the Arab minority. \nThree years prior\, in the year 2015\, at the Hansen House gardens\, Paradise is built – a haven in the middle of the city\, a white façade bounding a garden that has been expropriated from the public. In Paradise\, only one human being at a time can experience the ideal and modern natural living\, leaving the public with a sense of longing\, allowing a sneak peek into a free and peaceful world\, at an affordable price.\nThe entrepreneurs of Paradise Inn have invited an artist to live and create for a month and a half in this daydream – an infinite-star hotel for one\, a slice of nature in the middle of Jerusalem\, in the historical garden of the former Lepers’ House. \nFrom the middle of September\, Paradise’s sole room will be available for rent at an outrageous rate for all interested.\nPlease visit us and reserve your nights: www.paradisehotel.co\nMake your booking now on: https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/8228225 \nConcept: Sala-manca\nArchitects: Sala-manca and Nir Yahaom\nInterior Desing: Itamar Mendes-Flohr\nParadise Inn art collection: OZ Malul\, Guy Yitzhaki\, Itamar Mendes-Flohr\, Sala-manca\, Shaul Zemach.\nSouvenirs: Silent Room 1\, Chen Cohen | Room-Kit\, Pessi Komar | A letter for you\, Shiri Zinger\, Elevator to Paradise\, Lior Pinski\nAvantgarde workers: Yuval Galili\, Diego Rotman\, Yeshaiahu Rabinowitz\, Rotem Zuta\, Ayala Shamir\, Ktura Manor\, Lea Mauas\, Chen Cohen\, Galia Lulko\, Nahuel & Ayu\nParadise Inn website: www.paradisehotel.co\nObservation post to Paradise: Conrad Shick
